Updated: Aug 15
You may remember the August 7 reform on English test score requirements for Australian migration.
However, there was one detail that wasn’t mentioned back then: the English language requirement for the Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. Recently, the Department of Home Affairs released a supplementary update confirming that changes are on the way.
The new requirements will take effect on September 13, 2024.
Key Changes After September 13, 2024
If you are planning to apply for a 482 visa on or after September 13, please note the following updates:
Updated List of Accepted English Tests
You will need to take an English test specifically accepted for the 482 visa category. For example, the Cambridge C1 Advanced test will no longer be accepted after September 13.
Alignment with “Vocational English” Standards
The Department may align the 482 visa English requirement with the standard for Vocational English proficiency. The exact score benchmarks can be found in the reference table we have provided below.
No Change to Existing Exemptions
The current English test exemption rules for the 482 visa will remain unchanged — no additional restrictions will be introduced.
Possibility of Single-Skill IELTS Acceptance
The Department may approve IELTS One Skill Retake results to count towards meeting the required scores.
Important Timeline – September 13 as the Cut-Off Date
Tests taken before September 13, 2024 - Your results will be assessed under the current 482 requirements, and the validity period will remain at three years.
Tests taken on or after September 13, 2024 - Your results must meet the new requirements.
What This Means for Applicants
If you are already preparing for an English test or considering lodging a 482 visa application, you should plan your exam date and application timing strategically to avoid unexpected complications.
